May 1, 2015 Happy May Day!
I loved May Day as a child…making May Day baskets filling
them with candy and bringing them to friends doorsteps then ringing the bell
and running away fast …they would come out and chase us and if when they caught
us they then would deposit a kiss on our
cheeks…I wonder when that tradition died?
With my generation? I suppose in
this day and age parents would be driving the kids around the neighborhood…
that would take the fun out of it!
Our
first night “homeless” which we
technically are I guess…but so very lucky to have our trailer… though packed
full that it is and we still haven’t gotten everything out of the
vehicles. I suppose some things will
stay… Mary Heie did suggest leaving some of my clothes in luggage in the car
and I do plan to do that. I still have
my luggage I bought with my graduation money that is the hard formed plastic…
that I could even put in the shed…shouldn’t get too musty since it won’t be
there that long…we’ll see.
I
had started a batch of Kombucha last time we were here…it was slow in
fermenting because it was so cool in here..it didn’t produce a very large baby
but it had fermented …so I removed the scoby… I will bottle it later ..I have
to go and get the bottles from the totes under the trailer… it is still a
little nippy outside.
Fergie
is adjusting well… her water bottle is leaking …I changed the paper in her cage
and poured water in a little dish for her…Steve thought she would just tip
it…she does like to bat her food dish around sometimes…but I think once she
figures it out she won’t do it with that dish…and so far so good… I used tuna
cans in the winter for my Rabbitry on the farm and it worked great…didn’t take
those sweet angoras to figure out how to drink from there.
Fergies
wool is really looking silky and ready to pluck.
We
went to Iron River to get the mail and check at the DMV…Steve thinks we have to
live her 30 days before we change our licences… but the DMV was closed..only
open 3 days a wk… and Friday isn’t one of them.
We
stopped at the grocery and as we got out I mentioned that Beth told me that
TJ’s hardware across the street had appliances..Steve actually wanted to go and
check it out… he usually has to think about things first, but we do have lots
of time on our hands.
He
looks much better today ..I wonder if the stress of selling the house and
getting all our “Stuff” out came to a head…
I
am just thankful he is better.
We
walked over to the hardware.. Beth said it was in the back…we walked to the
back and there was just a hallway with stuff hanging on the walls… so we went
up front and asked the gal…she grabbed some keys and said they were in a
building right behind the store.
They
had quite a selection and I couldn’t believe the prices…gas ranges for
$500-600… washer and dryers 400-600… we want a fridge with a freezer on the
bottom and they had one but it was a 2 door top… 1300 …which wasn’t bad
either…but she told us they can order whatever we want…they deliver too… I
think this is the first thing with building our house that hasn’t been a
sticker shock. I have changed my mind
back to getting a gas range… they had one with 5 burners too… it had a griddle
that fit down the middle for it… hmm…
We
picked up some groceries and then stopped at the thrift shop..I was looking for
baskets for the 2 shelves in our night stands…I thought it would be a place to
put our undies and socks. I found one …
looks like it was a bason you get from the hospital when you’re a patient. But it was a perfect size.
My
phone rang as I was walking to the van…and it was Beth…she said she had some
sad news…at first I thought she was teasing me..and going to tell me something
silly…but no…it was very sad… Dorothy and Dennis Swenson house had burned down
during the night and they both died in it… they own Swenson’s Cottages in
Corny…we stayed there often
Our
first few yrs coming up here…a couple Corny weekends… it was a step back in time there…pretty run down but
a plae to stay…and they were right on the Siskiwit River and wonderful walking
down to there and on the falls.. Dorothy was in her 90’s and Dennis in his late
50’s or 60’s..an odd fellow..he was an EMT and I remember how grateful Rocky
was to him when he had his car accident…he was so comforting and kept him calm…
they also lived next to Rocky’s Dad… Rocky ran over to get him when his Dad had
his Stroke.. such a shock… Beth just found out that there is a sister too… such
a shock.
We
stopped and got our water and came home…the little fridge is so jammed packed I
did find some room for the things we bought…luckily it wasn’t much.
I
went and got the kombucha bottles and bottled that…there was no room for the
frozen fruit in the freezer so I loaded the bottles with Raspberries and set
them out for the 2nd fermentation.
I
went and got the game cam and checked it out… just a big old raccoon…. I moved
it to where I saw the 4 deer come through to our yard
It
was a quiet afternoon…I heard from Linda and our check for the house was
deposited in our checking…surprisingly it was a grand more than expected from
our early closing.. she will mail the closing papers and deposit slip.
I
called Pam to visit and tell her what’s been happening…and Beth drove up… had
to cut it short…
Beth
was working in Orienta … it is so fun hearing about her day.. she showed me
pictures of the sanded reclaimed fir that was installed in a remodel she is
working on…it really was beautiful… not that expensive either… but maybe the
install would be more? Not sure… she
said the lady told the carpenter that some suggested staining it dark… it was
so beautiful in the natural colors… he told her she just needs to varnish it…
her husband said someone told him you an just oil it.. the carpenter was a bit
frustrated…lets not listen to the 20+ yr experienced person and go with what
your co workers
”think”
you should do..
I
packed up the small turkey and the pie in the cooler for Beth to keep in her
freezer for us. Removing the turkey
from the freezer did upset my food int here that was balanced perfectly… but I
readjusted it and there is more room.. the pie I was going to bake…but I sure
don’t’ need any sweets… better to save it for company.
After
Beth left for home I went in to get supper started…I looked out and Patty and
Carl were walking up the driveway.
They
were happy to hear we are finally here for good…or I think they are! Murphy went after Rex as soon as I let him
out…darn dog… Rex just ignored him…maybe Murphy will get tired of doing that
since he doesn’t get any reaction…
It
was a beautiful night…but as the sun was
going down it did get cold.
They
didn’t stay long …just their evening walk after dinner… wish we ate earlier so
we could do that…it gets dark and that is when Steve wants to take a walk. I was too tired tonight to do that.
Steve
and I both feel it hasn’t sunk in yet that we are finally here for good...
I am not doing much editing of my blog so please excuse... Darlene
