June 6th
The preparation for our street sewer/water and road rebuilding has started. As we were packing the car the city electric and gas were there..they had removed our mailbox and dug a 4x4' hole ..they were going to be shutting off the gas to our house and would light our pilot light for the water heater when they were finished. Steve explained that we were leaving soon so they gave us a # to call to get it done when we returned. The man who's task it was to shut the gas off got there and told me the same thing...I said we wouldn't be back until Sunday eve... Steve heard me and came out and told him we didn't know for sure when we would be back maybe earlier... Steve didn't like me telling them any of our plans...am I too trusting or is he too much the opposite??
Luck being on our side as we were just about to pull out the driveway the gas man knocked on the car window and said he had finished and if we had 5 mins he could light the pilot.. so we let him in to do that... with that accomplished we were off it was a little after 9am.
It was sunny when we left Hutch but just past St Cloud it got overcast and even a few drops of rain...but before we got to Hinckley the sun reappeared!
We stopped at Cassidy's our favorite waitress, Diane has Wednesday's off..missed her cheery face!
I had a Philly sandwich minus the onions and bun..but it didn't set well with my tummy... only thing I can guess is there must have been broth with fructose involved in the prep... while Steve finished his lunch I went out and let Murphy out to run and "do his business" ..the housekeeping ladies from the motel next door where out having a smoke break ... they got a kick out of how Murphy holds his leash in his mouth as we walk ..I brought him over to say "hello"..they appreciated how I picked up "his business" and disposed of it.
After 3 trips to the bathroom I felt safe for us to continue on.
I was not a good navigator and fell asleep...my head was bobbing lulling me in a wonderful slumber.. I felt the car breaking and the blinker go on ..I raised my head and saw he was turning on Hwy 39 to Superior...I stopped him saying we turn on Hwy 4 to cross over to Wi . he told me that was 5 miles back..(how could I have dozed that long?) he was looking for Hwy W or H... which are on the Wisconsin side so missed 4... so he did turn around and take 39...I checked the map and we really weren't that far off course. What would he do without me?
We did go over a really cool Iron bridge..it had a sign that said "no trucks should pass cars"... made my imagination go a bit wild!
The intersection of Hwy 35 in Superior had a cool antique shop called "Shabby hut" or something like that...I made a mental note to take that route again and stop there..
We got to Port Wing around 2:45 so we still made good time.
Steve capped the gas line to the furnace ..the motor was checked out and has a bent blower fan he hadn't gotten it fixed yet.
Murphy would not get out of the car...really strange... I ended up having to bribe him with a Charlie treat...
I got things put away...and the essentials done...(potty ready for use)... Murphy and I went for a walk..I was on the search for wild bee balm..I saw it last year and didn't know what it was and Joyce Rust identified it for me..Connie this week when we were talking about Bergamot told me it was also called wild bee balm and it is a very valuable herb.. so I was excited to find it and harvest it...but it was too early I guess..also too early for yarrow and also couldn't find Plantain!
I did pick some Daisies and Buttercups for the "Cat Vase"..we had a barn cat that looked just like this ... I miss my barn cats...

I went to "the store" to pick up some Ground Beef and other essentials ...they grind their own beef and it is so lean and very reasonable ..I plan to bring some home.
We sat outside and just enjoyed the Peace and beauty..Patty and Rex ( the Lab) came for a visit ..they had just been down to the Flag so Rex could swim..because of Murphy's aggression to dogs visiting I put his leash on him.. Rex (who is about 3x the size of Murphy) would not get off of the 4 wheeler..most likely because of what a bully Murphy is... Murphy growled and I smacked him... Patty didn't like that but he needs to learn that behavior is not acceptable... they didn't stay too long.. and soon after she left we went inside and I started supper...I brought some beet greens with tiny little beets from my garden ..I had thinned them out and they were so delicious..I fried up some potatoes and hamburgers...I would have grilled but we were out of charcoal..
As I was working in the kitchen Murphy was standing at the door growling... he wouldn't go out (my brave dog) we didn't see anything but dogs have such a keen sense of smell and hearing..so we figured something was out there.. I glanced out the window and I what I thought was a deer ambling off the driveway was actually a huge wild Turkey... it was the biggest one I had ever seen..Steve laughed at me but he did admit it was big...I went out to get a picture but it was entering the woods so missed it.
I ate but like always Steve just fixed his plate to eat later...he falls asleep right after he eats so likes to wait ..but at least I can get the kitchen cleaned up...there is something to say about smaller kitchens..you need to clean things up right away or you don't have any room ..so it is always tidy!
He ate around 9 and went to bed.. I said my Rosary and then read from my Fulton Sheen meditations...this is what I read.. "The worst thing in the world is not sin...it is the denial of sin by false conscience for that attitude makes forgiveness impossible"..
My Dad loved watching his program on TV...
