October 21st
Steve wasn't hungry last night and was tired so he went to bed early. I stayed up until 9 knitting...had to take the heel flap out and re do...didn't do the slip 1 on the 1st sock...one problem with not completing projects right away.
I am up at 5:30..it is 50 degrees inside. drinking my tea and listening to MPR...I am a bit chilly so I got my little personal heater and plugged it in...nice warm air blowing on me..aah the comforts!
Steve checked the temp outside and it looked like it was 24..
I was charging up my cell phone and tried holding it up by the ceiling and antenna. I got one bar..called Beth.....YEAH..She is coming and we are all going to Iron River...she needs to wash clothes. That was the last time the phone worked that weekend..
It is a beautiful sunny day...the leaves are all off of the trees...the poplars still have some...It is so pretty with the evergreens and then the gray trees and with the hills...
Beth got her clothes into the washer and we then went to the grocery store- I somehow forgot my list so tried to remember what was on it..Steve found his $3.99 vino and was happy.
A stop at Pistal Pete's for Steve to price Rugers, the Laundromat and then home.
We had invited our friend, Danny Whitford for the weekend and had left him a note to make himself at home...but he hadn't shown up.
I had gotten 2 pie crusts at the store and opted to make an apple pie instead of the cake I had planned on. I couldn't find a regular Apple pie recipe but there was on with Cheddar cheese I decided on.
I needed to go to The Store in Port Wing to pick up spices..Judy from the Fishery was working... . a discussion arose between Judy and another customer about how neither one used Nutmeg in their apple pies, just Cinnamon... ..the Nutmeg turned out to be close to expiration so I got it 1/2 price... interesting...I was sure Nutmeg was something I always used....must be a regional thing...
I made the pie and while it was baking I took a nap...SteveIsat outside...
after the pie was done...I put together my Taco soup in the crockpot ... cleaned up the kitchen and then went and picked more apples to roast over the fire that night...then Murphy and I went for a run down to the Flag River...almost to the River as we passed a place a black lab started coming down the driveway barking at us... so instead of turning around at the river landing and going back, I decided to go around the block (2miles or more) . stopping at the Port Bar and calling Beth to come and get me... got a few steps then thought ...'this is stupid"...turned around and peeked around a bush and the dog was heading back up the driveway...so we started walking back got, in front of the driveway and the dog turned around and started barking and heading back to us so we started running and of course there was a big hill to climb. I was exhausted when I got home...I don't know why I have this fear of dog fights... Murphy was off leash but he would just heel next to me and dogs don't just attack, well, unless they are rabid......I have to work on that...
Beth and Rocky hadn't made it over yet so we decided to eat ... the taco soup was good and spicy...used my hot peppers I dried in the dehydrator... they were potent!
Beth and Rocky arrived around 7..Steve had gone over on the lawn mower with the wagon and filled the wagon with wood... so we were all set for Rocky to start the fire.
He got the fire started and we all went out ... Steve didn't see why we needed the quad chairs that Karen and Gary offered us..but I did and it was nice to have extra seating for people... I think he just likes to grumble ...
we roasted the apples ..Rocky stuck the wiener sticks into the ground over the fire ..when the skins were loose we peeled them and then rolled them in Brown Sugar and put them back on the fire... what a treat!! Rocky's turned out the best...after peeling he put it back on the fire a bit before rolling it in the sugar...it was super carmalized..
I gave Beth and Rocky some soup and they ate it by the fire...then we all had apple pie...we all agreed it was good with the Cheddar cheese.
Steve had gone off somewhere and from the direction he went we heard a noise...I told him we knew it was him...he said he didn't make the sound..Rocky said it was a sound he had heard before but didn't know what it was... we talked about the possibilities and decided it could be a Martin or something like that. Millie took off into the ravine after something..we were afraid it was a skunk..she had been sprayed that week and Beth didn't want to go through that again.. she did find that peroxide/baking soda was with a little Dawn worked great for that... but it was luckily raccoon that she shagged up a tree...pheew.........
They left around 9:30... I did dishes and went to bed.
